Organic fruit and vegetable gardening for health

Organic fruit and vegetable gardening for health

Organic fruit and vegetable gardening is not only therapeutic but growing organic fruit and vegetables provides you with pesticide free produce for you to enjoy.  It also supports the bees which science now concedes are affected by pesticides.  We need the bees for the production of our food so growing organically means that in the long term we will still have our food supplies.

This is the first year that my daughters and I have given organic gardening (or any gardening for that matter apart from mowing lawns) a go.  We decided to install a raised bed.  This entails digging out a rectangle just slightly larger than the raised bed (after which I certainly needed some ‘Yoga for Gardeners’ http://youtu.be/aYkU3tvnC0w ).  The bed itself slotted together easily.  The bed was then filled with organic compost (it takes more than you would think).  Our organic seeds had been started in the greenhouse (again in use for the first time) in April and now have been planted in the raised bed.  We found that organic seeds were not available at our local garden centre so we bought some on the internet. We have covered the bed over with a micromesh cover to prevent our nurtured plants from being eaten.  For this first year we are trying little gem lettuce, carrots and courgettes in the raised bed while in the greenhouse we have tomatoes, peppers and squash.  We also are growing blackcurrants and raspberries in the garden.  These may need netting soon to prevent little beaks competing with us for them but really I don’t mind sharing with the wildlife as long as they leave me some!  Last winter my holly tree was laden with berries and for three days the tree was full of birds eating the berries so that by Christmas we only had berry-less holly!  Never mind, hopefully it helped them through the winter.

Hope this has inspired you to have a go at organic fruit and vegetable gardening. Let me know how you get on.
